Remove iTunes Copy Protection from purchased songs (aka DRM)
So you bought a song from the iTunes music store but you cant seem to listen to it anywhere outside of iTunes or your iPod. Yes, that is dumb and really annoying. This is copy protection technology called “DRM” or “Digital Rights Management” and it exists solely to keep you from sharing the song with anyone else. But lets say you just need to get rid of that protection so you can use it elsewhere. Maybe you’re trying to:
- Use a DRM protected song from iTunes in iMovie or another video editing program.
- Listen to your protected songs in Windows Media Player if you’re using a PC
- Transfer your songs to another computer that doesn’t have iTunes
Luckily there is a way to do everything in this world. Here are instructions to get rid of that pesky copy protection.
Remember: Copyright laws prohibit you from distributing songs to anyone other than yourself even if you bought a copy of the song. The instructions on this page are not to be used to circumvent copyright laws.
1) Burn your song(s) to a CD
Create a new playlist in iTunes and put the song(s) you want on the playlist. Next, hit Burn CD and insert a blank CD into your CD drive. Once the disk is done burning move on to the next step.
2) Import your burned CD
The new CD will be recognized by iTunes once it’s done burning. You may need to type in the song name and artist info by hand but after you’ve done that click “Import” to copy the songs from the CD to your computer.
3) Enjoy your DRM free song!
The new version of the song you just imported is DRM free. You can now use it wherever you please!
